Clinton Urges Her Delegates to Back Obama

This was written and posted by the ever awesome Slinkerwink over at Kos... http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/10/ 62840/8533

Update [2008-6-10 11:44:17 by ragekage]:Wait, now this is on the rec list? Again, this is Slink's doing, please forward the goodwill for this story in her direction.

Here's the thing about Hillary Clinton. When she says she's a fighter, she means it. When she says she'll back Barack Obama, she means it. This story below illustrates that:

Hillary Clinton on Monday asked Democratic primary delegates who would have supported her in her presidential bid to back her former rival Barack Obama.

The request came in a Monday night teleconference, said Virgil J. Mayberry, a Rock Island County Board member and one of Sen. Clinton's delegates.

   ...

"She wants us to unite behind Obama and help him," said Mr. Mayberry, who chairs his party's minority caucus on the county board.

Mr. Mayberry said Sen. Clinton talked for about five minutes to Democratic national convention delegates from all over the country. She appeared upbeat, he said.

According to Mr. Mayberry, she also thanked the delegates for their support and said she planned on continuing to pursue health care as a major issue for the party during the upcoming campaign.

   ...

Mr. Mayberry, a Democrat, said he plans to honor Sen. Clinton's request.

"I plan on working for Sen. Obama as hard as I can," he said.

My hat's off to Senator Clinton on this one. For any remaining Kossacks thinking about her doing a subterfuge "Undermine Obama Operation" at the Democratic National Convention, that isn't going to happen. I really wish this had been the Hillary Clinton during the primary season, but she's regained my respect a lot with her actions recently.

Sick.  She's on point.  I hope we see more of her on the campaign trail over the course of the GE.

Much respect, Sen. Clinton.

The vast majority of Hillary's supporters (2.00 / 1)

will be on board. That is a given. It just really peeves me now that Hillary is "doing all the right things," she is such an angel, so gracious, and placing the Democratic party above all else. But when she was running against Senator Obama she was the devil incarnate, power hungry, full of selfish ambition. Those of us who passionately supported Hillary knew she would do the right thing, without hesitation, when the time was right. I'm all for unity, and now support Senator Obama 110%, but this is all just a bit irksome, imho.

Re: Clinton Urges Her Delegates to Back Obama (1.00 / 0)

Just read this on a pro hillary site:

A Texas delegate who was on that Monday night call posted a comment on the blog where the unfounded rumor started:

"I am a National Delegate for Clinton from Texas. I was on the conference call. Delegates were NOT released. We were told the same thing YOU ALL were told on Saturday. That she endorsed and would work for Obama.

To use the term "released" is not accurate. She and Harold Ickes asked that we hold together because of health care issues Hillary wants on the democrat platform.

I noticed she picked probably the most important domestic issue- health care- to run on. If she stays in the Senate, and we can get her and Elizabeth Edwards to push through a health care package- I'd love to see her bulldog that through the Congress, it'd be awesome- we'll be in good shape.

Lets. I don't think such a proposal would make it through Congress intact right now, but if we've got Senator Clinton bulldogging it through, and the political capital of a majority in both houses of Congress and real experts like Elizabeth Edwards working on getting it passed, we'll be in good shape.

Yeah, but if it's mandates, then he really can't mention it.  It would play right into that right-wing, scary "socialism" meme.  The approach should be this: try to pass with mandates, with the assurance that Obama would indeed sign it.  But my fear is that mandates v. no mandates may be the difference between easy passage and a filibuster.  I hope not, but we'll see.

This is HUGE News (2.00 / 2)

And it makes my dream of "full-throated" campaigning by Hillary and Bill will be on this summer.

Something that would have looked awkward without releasing the delegates.

Also I think this increases her chances at VP, or whatever it is, this gives her a little more political capital.

Hillary did NOT release her delegates! (2.00 / 1)

I don't know how this rumor became news. But it is just not true that Hillary released her delegates.

If it were true the networks would have reported it hours ago, which they obviously didn't. Plus there wouldn't be delegates (who participated in the conference call) flatly denying that they have been released by Hillary.

I'm certain if Senator Clinton chooses to do that, it will be immediately prior to the Convention, in a show of unity.

Sricki, in the media's defense, mainly Keith Olberman I think the McLelan testifying to the Judicial committee was breaking news, and it was.
Debbie Wasserman Shultz totally took the story from a 8 to a 10 when she conceded she will ask about the pre-war intelligence, which is above and beyond the stated purpose.

Re: Clinton Urges Her Delegates to Back Obama (none / 0)

From a glance, this is not working with the H44 crowd.  Hillary needs to use the word "release" in regards to her delegates to hammer it home.

Re: Clinton Urges Her Delegates to Back Obama (none / 0)

If Hillary "releases" her delegates, and something Gary-Hart-style tragic happens to Obama in the meantime before the convention (like, he gets caught with a dead girl or a live boy, as they say..as if that would ever happen), does she lose the leverage she would have had? Is that why she hangs onto them?

NO.

If anything happens to Obama between now and the convention, the delegates can select another to carry the banner.  At this moment, everyone knows Hillary would be that choice.

unlike Obama, who was given some from Michigan.

She does not need to release them. She can influence party platforms and such at the convention. You force her to release her delegates, you lose in November.

Re: She holds them until (none / 0)

Catfish-

By asking her delegates to support Obama she looses nothing. It's not her delegates that are going to give her clout at the convention. The DNC maybe stupid, but it's not suicidal. And dissing Hillary at the convention in anyway would be suicidal.

And as everybody has said even if her delegates do go to Obama now, so what. They can all come back at the convention should there be a need.

I never had any doubt that she'd ultimately do the right thing. The woman you're seeing now -- the woman you saw Saturday -- is the woman I've been so incredibly proud to support all these months. Her supporters have always seen this person. We see her both more and less clearly than Obama supporters do (if that makes any sense). Same goes for Obama, too.

About "release" (none / 0)

Uh folks, remember none of them technicially HAVE to vote for her, so there's nothing to release them from.

Telling them to support Obama is the same thing as "releasing" them.  They were always free to turn to Obama.  Only now, they have the candidates blessing so it is more legit looking.
