Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket

The last time I discussed the democratic ticket for November, I talked in growing terms about an Obama/Sebelius Ticket:  http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/10/1436 14/697
My admiration for that ticket is still as strong as ever; however, I just read an article about how major Obama supporters are purveying the possibility of giving the VP ticket to a Clinton supporter for the interest of unity.  The names being thrown out there include Ted Strickland, Evan Byah, and General Clark: http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/10/1436 14/697
I will admit that of the three, I'm very convinced that General Clark would get it...
I've been a supporter of General Clark since his days as the NATO supremo; I also believe that he's so qualified to be the President of this nation.  I only started supporting Obama when I realized that the Clintons would not allow the General to run.  So if it's Clark, I'll be getting two for one actually.

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (2.00 / 1)

I like Clark but he was a really awful candidate and i am not sure how much he would really help the ticket.  But if polls showed he could help carry AR i would support this.

Obama wouldn't know a great person (none / 0)

if s/he sat up and punched him in the nose.

(Or unless Michelle tells him about it!)

I love Wes Clark and will write him and (none / 0)

BEG him never to consider an Obama VP.

He's so much better/classier than resorting to that!

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (none / 0)

for the sake of equality, I'd suggest either removing the word "General" or adding the equivalent titles (Governor, Senator, etc) to the other options.

And I hope you understand Bill Clinton's not eligible :-)

I love Clark theoretically, but he really stank on the campaign trail.

If the VP doesn't believe the P crossed the "CIC threshold", the VP has no place on the P's ticket.

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (2.00 / 1)

Me thinks it's a good choice, it would balance Obama's perceived weaknesses. I could live with it.  There has also been talk of Obama/Powell.

by LtWorf on Sun May 18, 2008 at 02:13:53 PM EST

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (2.00 / 1)

Please, no Powell.  I have no doubt that he is an honorable man in general, but his half-truths and lies in the run up to the Iraq War helped sell this awful, disastrous war to the public at large.  I think most people could live with Wes Clark, though.

After studying recent electoral vote maps (1.00 / 0)

Obama needs Ted Strickland. Without Ohio, Obama loses. Even with Ohio, he faces an electoral vote challenge.

The best choice would be Hillary, but I'm not holding my breath that Obama or party leaders will recognize that in light of the Democrat's history of presidential losses.

by phoenixdreamz on Sun May 18, 2008 at 02:16:22 PM EST

I live a Clark VP better than the others (2.00 / 1)

But I am afraid that others will perceive it as an admission that Obama is weak on military/international issues.  I would also like to see if his addition could run up the favorables in any of the states under contention.

Next I like Sebelius, however I also think that too many people will perceive her to be a replacement for Clinton.

My least favorite would be Hillary, mostly because I believe her addition to the ticket would both kill a ton of crossover votes (Republicans have been sucking on the teat of Clinton hate for a generation) and because it might energize dead enders like my Dad to come out and vote against her.

Re: I live a Clark VP better than the others (2.00 / 1)

Keep in mind the GOP has not even begun its war on Obama - I highly doubt those supposed die hard Republican cross over voters will have a real affinity for Obama come November. The GOP is very good at influencing voters in their party not only disagree to with, but rabidly HATE the opposing candidate, if you recall. I doubt Obama is somehow immune to that effect.

Re: the GOP has not even begun its war on Obama (2.00 / 1)

Agree. The Rev. Wright issue will resurface with a vengence during the general campaign, guaranteeing the Republican base will turn out en masse for McCain. To assume otherwise is sheer lunacy.

I know that I don't have data (2.00 / 1)

but I have a fairly rabid republican group in my family and they don't like McCain, so it is going to be hard for them to stir up the base.

Wright isn't going to stick too much cause the Republican base is chock full of fundamentalists, and say what you will, but that Wright fits right in

They need to find something else to hang their hat on...oh, no doubts they will try.  I think they are going for the "He's gonna take your guns away!" shtick.

What would change then (2.00 / 2)

that hasn't already happened? The Rev. Wright crap was used against the Democratic candidates in Louisiana and Mississippi to no avail. He still nearly won Indiana despite it. It has not fatally damaged him, how much more can it?

Can we please stop being so afraid of the Republican smear machine and start fighting it. this is my problem with some Clinton supporters. They try to act like "oh, the Republicans wins swiftboat him" as if they won't beat Clinton relentlessly over the head with honesty and trustworthiness. As if they're not going to run commercials showing Hillary supporting the war, then opposing it, Bosnia, etc and ask "Can we trust her?"

Stop being afraid and start fighting.

Re: What would change then (2.00 / 1)

Acknowledging reality is not fear; rather burying your head in the sand is simply stupidity.  I am not AFRAID of the GOP; I support Clinton & believe that she is the only candidate still in the race who knows how to take them on.  You know if you had 2 people to send into a warzone; one guy professed certain ideas & had looked at a map & the other one had been there done that lost & won battles & knew how to get down in the trenches through first-hand experience, I am going to pick the latter as a better bet to win!

That's great (none / 0)

but absent that person, there is no reason to believe the other will not succeed. Your plan is "well, if Clinton doesn't get the nomination, then Obama won't win, so I won't even try"

You obviously haven't seen him fire back at Bush over his comments at the Knesset. He DOES know how to take them on.

Indeed.  The Rev, the Rezko, and the angry wife  - the GOP 527s probably already have their videos ready.  And I have no doubt there's more added attractions in the wings.

Why the hell would she want it, anyway? She would have much more power in the Senate.

Clark brings a massive resume (2.00 / 2)

and great foreign policy experience.  He's also gotten better as a speaker and debater with his stint on (shudder) Fox.  He would also counter any perceived McCain military strength.

I think McCain may pick Condi Rice as his VP.  So does that change anything?  Not really.  But these decisions aren't made in a vacuum.

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (none / 0)

I'm not sure that we want Clark showing up Obama when it comes to national security credentials. I think I'm leaning more toward Strickland or Bayh right now.

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (none / 0)

Obama needs to win in either Florida or Ohio plus win in the states Kerry won in 2004 to become our next president.  If he picks Gov. Strickland of Ohio, he can win there and thus win the presidency.  Furthermore, Gov. Strickland can perhaps help Obama do well in Indiana and put it into play.

by Steve24 on Sun May 18, 2008 at 03:10:18 PM EST

Dems need military cred (none / 0)

either Clinton or Obama will have to pick someone with military cred. to me, the choices are down to Clark or Webb. Webb might seal the election with his appeal to the GOP & independents, but he's too conservative in case something were to happen to Obama. so i'd go with Clark.

the time to rise has been engaged.

None of the above (none / 0)

Choosing Sebelius would turn off Clinton supporters. Most of us support Clinton not because she is A woman, but because she is THAT PARTICULAR woman. Nothing against Sebelius, but that choice would be seen as an insulting attempt at appeasement and it wouldn't fly.

Wes Clark is too valuable to be wasted as VP. He would better serve as National Security Adviser or something like that.

Bill Richardson might be OK, but many Clinton supporters will not forget what they consider his self serving betrayal of Hillary. I don't think he would help that much, but I think he's running hard for the position.

John Edwards has already had his run at VP, and while I love him I just don't think it's a good match. Anyhow, he has stated firmly that he doesn't want it.

Bill Clinton. That was a joke, right?

Re: None of the above (none / 0)

I am pretty sure you are right in terms of perception but that's unfortunate because she was a favorite for VP of his BEFORE all the mess.
She is perfect for him and reinforced his message 100%.
Hopefully she will try to sell herself in the couple months we have until the convention so that if she chooses her, people know it is not because she is just a woman.

Re: None of the above (2.00 / 1)

Seriously I love how my support of a candidate supposedly boils down to her gender @@ And yet I would vote for Christie Whitman or Condi Rice or many other women who are politically visible.  Her gender, to me, is irrelevant. It is her record that I like!

BO & BR, that's the ticket (none / 0)

I vote for Bill Richardson. That will really unify the party. Clinton supporter's are in aw over Richardson....really.

WAKE UP!

Re: BO & BR, that's the ticket (none / 0)

I mean talk about practically giving confirmation to the rumor of a back room deal which caused him to endorse Obama. The man is now polarizing in the party, but hey lets further alienate Hillary Clinton, her supporters with a total act of disregard.

Clarke is not a good campaigner. Richardson is an absolute non starter.

by rocky on Sun May 18, 2008 at 04:51:31 PM EST

Re: Obama/Wesley Clark Ticket (none / 0)

Richardson is a no no for a long list of reasons.
I love love love Sebelius but if we have a reconciliation ticket ...
Strickland or Clark are no nos for me
They both said things about Obama that should disqualify them.
Bayh is really really really dull and I am not sure he brings anything to the ticket besides his faithfulness to her but I would tolerate him.
by Benjaminomeara on Sun May 18, 2008 at 05:49:41 PM EST

Rule #1 (none / 0)

Should not have a VP candidate who did a photo op with a war criminal:

http://www.apfn.net/messageboard/01-14-0 4/discussion.cgi.35.html

How do we say to the world we are instituting a new foreign policy, if the second in command has a photo op with the butcher of Sebrenicia?

Sorry, but this boo boo is an automatic disqualifier
